Jacqueline Bissett's
Fashion illustrator Jacqueline Bissett shares how her childhood passion of designing clothes for her Sindy doll inspired her career.
Vicky: What drew you to illustration/design? Jacqueline: I started when I was little, designing and drawing outfits for my Sindy dolls, although coming from a small town I had no idea what a fashion designer was, let alone a fashion illustrator! My father is a retired draughtsman so he always gave us reems of paper. Vicky: Do you have any formal design training? Jacqueline: Bournville School of Art (over the Green from Cadburys!) and Epsom College of Art and Design. Vicky: Where do you live now & what drew you there? Jacqueline: Plumpton, East Sussex. We found it online whilst living in France for an idyllic year of swimming every day and drinking too much wine! England seemed so green and lush, I never knew that I wanted to live in the countryside til I found Plumpton. Vicky: Who or What is your biggest inspiration? Jacqueline: Rene Gruau and other 1950s illustrators, my tutors from both colleges- Lynne Robinson (she taught me everything there is to know about working as a fashion illustrator), the late, great Colin Barnes, Shari Peacock, Kim Hubbard - all brilliant artists! Vicky: How do you get your ideas? Jacqueline: I'm still very inspired by the Brighton gay club scene, although we don't get out often having 2 young children, Grant (my husband) and I still go to Wild Fruit whenever we can. New trends inspire me constantly to evolve my style.

Vicky: Do you collect anything? Jacqueline: Only artwork, Grant and I do swapsies with other artists, the painting featured here is by Sem (Stephen Meakin). Vicky: Tell us about a favourite project you’ve recently completed. Jacqueline: Not yet completed, but I'm really loving a current project working on a Vintage clothing website. Vicky: Who is/are your illustration hero/es? Jacqueline: Very obvious I'm afraid, but Rene Gruau was a genius of line and his wonderfully graphic use of colour, he worked right up until the age of 92! Vicky: Who is/are your musical hero/es? Jacqueline: Blondie, Goldfrapp, Madonna. Vicky: What is the funniest thing you have ever done? Jacqueline: Got married- Grant and I laughed throughout the whole ceremony! Vicky: Would you continue to illustrate if you won the lottery? Jacqueline: Absolutely, I want to illustrate until I can't see or hold a brush! Vicky: If you could travel back in time, who would be the one person you would want to meet? Jacqueline: I'd love to have cocktails with Marilyn Monroe! Vicky: What is your favourite graphics programme? Jacqueline: I hate computers! I only use Photoshop to scan and brighten before emailing.
