Madamesange's

Madamesange, one of our newest talents, tells of her penchant for rummaging in secondhand bookshops, charity
shops & carboots.
Vicky: This has been an exciting year for you. What’s been the best bit? Madamesange: Being taken on by the agency and having a great year of exhibitions throughout London. I also found my soul mate too, which was rather nice. Vicky: What drew you to illustration/design? Madamesange: The ability to inject my slightly quirky sense of humour into designs and a passion for childrens illustration. Vicky: Where is your studio and can you describe it for me? Madamesange: My studio forms part of my flat. I hunker down on an old salvation army table, next to the phone and near the stereo and that’s it. Locked in! Vicky: Do you collect anything? Madamesange: I'm told I hoard things. I love fonts and lettering and love rummaging in second hand bookshops, carboots and charity shops for kids books and ephemera. I've recently got two very old typewriters which weigh a tonne, out from my mum's loft. I also have a larger than life Courage Cockerel which has fallen off a pub.

Vicky: Do you keep a scrapbook? Madamesange: I pretty much scribble on anything. But I mostly sketch in old spelling books. Vicky: What are your interests outside of illustration? Madamesange: I love discovering interesting parts of London. Oddball events and places like Secret Cinema and Shunt when it was going are typical of the things I like to do. Vicky: Tell us about a favourite project you’ve recently completed. Madamesange: Six decorative greeting cards for Almanac. I'm also very pleased to be part of the East End Arts Club and am looking forward to their Christmas Exhibition where I’ll be showcasing a new limited edition print. I've also just been selected to exhibit in the ArtGroups “Let’s Play” Exhibition in the Maverik Showroom, from Nov 30th – 5th Dec. Should be a good one!! Vicky: What is/are your art hero/es? Madamesange: Tony Hart and Rolf Harris.
