What drew you to illustration/design?
PETER: As a child, I was in awe with any kind of illustrations and paintings. Apart from a few sketches I was not to focussed though. I spent more time with my friends, skating and making music. Only during my studies of graphic design I started building up some ambition when I learned about the profession of a concept artist. A dream job for me!
Do you have any formal design training?
PETER: Not really, the basics of design were brought to me during the studies of graphic design and product design. In this job you are never finished with learning anyway.
QUESTION: Where do you live?
PETER: In Hamburg.
QUESTION: Can you describe your studio for me?
PETER: My studio is in our 3-room apartment, which I share with my girlfriend. The room is really small, but even features a little couch. My girlfriend, who is also a designer, would sit there every time I need an advice or want her opinion to my work. This way we can talk about projects and do brainstormings. Apart from that, there is a closet with two big drawers which hold my collected work. Printer/Scanner, desk with 2 monitors and a Wacom tablet.
QUESTION: Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
PETER: I am unable to not look at things through the eyes of a designer. Therefore eveything inspires me in a way. I can´t describe it any better.
QUESTION: How do you get the best ideas?
PETER: It´s not so much the flash of inspiration, in my case the best ideas come up through hard work. You have to dig into a theme. Associations arise quickly but everybody has them. It starts to be exciting, when you drift away from the overall theme with an illustration that stil matches it but not in a totally obvious way.
QUESTION: What technique do you use?
PETER: Almost exclusively with my Wacom tablet.
QUESTION: What would be your dream job/commission?
PETER: A comic, and I will definitely do it as soon as the right time comes for it.
QUESTION: Who are your illustration heroes?
PETER: Scott Robertson, Johannes Helgeson, Sergey Kolesov, Michal Sawtyruk.
QUESTION: Do you keep a sketch book?
PETER: Yes and much as I like my tablet, a pencil is irreplaceable.
