Books, bags, buses – Ayang Cempaka is an artist whose colourful, whimsical illustrations are making an impact in publishing, fashion and even transport. As well as illustrating storybooks, she runs a company that produces stylish leather bags, embroidered clutches and stationery with her sister. At a much larger scale, her vibrant illustrations have appeared on Transjakarta buses traversing the Indonesian capital. She’s clearly an artist who catches the imagination.
Born in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, Ayang moved to Dubai with her husband in 2010. Her bag business was already going strong, but she decided to broaden her horizons by marketing her illustration skills online. Now she’s a favourite with global brands and her collaboration with Sunglasses Hut led to a special edition case featuring illustrations of camels, falcons, palm trees and Dubai’s famous skyscrapers.
Her influences include vintage children’s books and illustrators including Alain Grée, Mary Blair, Dahlov Ipcar and Alice and Martin Provensen. The wildlife and creative culture of Indonesia are also an inspiration to her.
